The Nintendo Switch Online app is now available for download from the iOS App Store and Google Play Store in various regions, although it seems that the servers for the app aren’t working for everyone just yet. Nintendo announced previously that the company’s online app would launch on July 21, the release date for Splatoon 2. It’s clear that the app has gone live before that date.

NeoGAF users first noticed that the app had popped up on the Australian store, followed by releases on other regional stores worldwide. It’s available in good ol’ Blighty right now.

Whilst it is possible to download the app, some of you may not be able to log in just yet. However, I’ve not experienced any problems and have logged in without issue. Right now there isn’t much to do, with Splatoon 2 being the only Switch game with specific services. But it’s working, so that’s half the battle.

When Nintendo originally announced the Nintendo Switch, it said that the console would receive a companion app for smartphones that would in turn enable voice communications, and handle other online services such as in-game parties and game invites. The Nintendo Switch Online app is Nintendo’s method of dealing with online functions we have become used to seeing built into the console online-gaming experience. A particularly cumbersome approach in theory, it’s not long till we can see it in practice, and form our own opinions.
