The Nintendo Switch will deliver 1080p visuals when connected to the dock, a source with knowledge of an upcoming press event for the system has revealed to Let’s Play Video Games.

The USB-C equipped dock will enable the switch to draw power direct from the mains, whilst an extra fan will ensure components are kept cool. These two things will enable the Switch to be up-clocked to provide the additional performance required to offer 1080p.

Think of it as a laptop running in Battery Saver or Performance mode:

Battery Saver Mode: Slows down the CPU, GPU and turns off the fan to conserve battery.

Performance Mode: Cranks everything up with no concerns of burning through the battery in a matter of minutes. Fans are turned on to stop components from melting.

Docks will not be tied to Switch units, with any Switch able to be placed into any dock. Additional docks will be sold at some point following launch in March.

All this and more is expected to be revealed by Nintendo on January 13.
