I’ve written about how we need a Nintendo Switch 2 way too often. I’ve also written enough speculation on the topic that there’s nothing left to speculate. This is the first time writing anything really concrete about the Switch’s successor too, and it’s coming in the most Nintendo way possible.

Shuntaro Furukawa, President of Nintendo has had the following to say about the Nintendo Switch 2:

We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.

This is huge news, and it’s the first real time that a successor to the Switch has been addressed. There’s no confirmation as to what it is, when it could be coming, or what it’s even going to be called, but there’s enough there to really excite me.

The Japanese fiscal year ends on March 31st, so we should hear about a Nintendo Switch 2 before the end of Q1 2025. That’s still a long way off, but it’s something to look forward to.

It’s quite amusing that – in the most Nintendo way possible – the reveal tiptoes around all information carefully, while also announcing a reveal at a much later and very ambiguous date. Remember how Rockstar announced that a GTA 6 trailer release date? This is that very same level of confidence. It’s even stated that the lamenting swansong for the Nintendo Switch, this year’s Nintendo Direct, will address the future of software for the console, though there will be no mention of its successor at all. Talk about a tease.

I won’t go much into why I think we need a Nintendo Switch 2 here, but that doesn’t matter really. This reveal confirms that something could be coming, or in the worst case scenario, it could be Nintendo confirming that they don’t plan for a Switch successor. That won’t happen though, surely.
