Nintendo is using the extra grunt of the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware specs to improve Nintendo 64 emulation on the new handheld.

A week before the official release of the new Nintendo handheld, a new announcement has revealed some new features for players with a Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack subscription.

Nintendo Switch 2 new N64 features

In a new YouTube video, Nintendo confirmed that the Nintendo 64 features of the Expansion Pack subscription will now be extended exclusively on the new hardware.

Now, just like with NES and SNES games, players will be able to rewind gameplay within Nintendo 64 games. This means that players who miss a big jump in Super Mario 64 or get their behinds kicked by an Ocarina of Time boss will be able to simply rewind the last minute of gameplay and try again.

Additionally, players will be able to fully remap controls for every Nintendo 64 game as well as apply a CRT filter in an attempt to make the retro games look like they’re being played in the 90s. Well, if the 90s had HD resolutions on the N64.

While the Nintendo Switch 2 has access to every single one of the aforementioned features, the OG Switch will also have an improved experience. Players on the original hardware will be able to remap controls and “view” the controls which is technically classed as a feature.

The Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack N64 Classics update will go live on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

Of course, the Nintendo Switch 2 also has access to a tonne of exclusive features such as the Discord-like GameChat feature. Additionally, Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack subscribers will also have access to GameCube games. Hopefully, one day, Nintendo Wii titles will also come to the service, but that has yet to be officially announced. (Come on, Nintendo, give me MadWorld!)
