The president of Nintendo has stressed the importance of the Switch’s second year on the market, stating it’ll be a ‘crucial’ period for the software giant if it’s to perpetuate the console’s success. After all, everyone knows that sophomore albums are the hardest, right?

Chatting with Japanese publication Mainichi (via Nintendo Everything), Tatsumi Kimishima said that the corporation views the hybrid system as a ‘games console with a long lifespan,’ and that Ninty’s goal is to ‘add more users, including those who barely touch games consoles.’

‘In order to be playable in the long term, the second year is crucial,’ said Kimishima-san, who added that the continued support from third-party studios will lay the foundations for new genres on the platform.

However, does the Switch have what it takes to rival the Wii, Nintendo’s motion controller-powered behemoth from 2006? While he couldn’t say for sure, Kimishima did observe that worldwide momentum is certainly pointing that way. It’s got a way to go though, as the Wii has moved over 100 million units worldwide.

That’s not to say the Switch isn’t setting tills alight though. Far from it, as the console has managed to flog 10 million units globally despite only launching in March of last year, as well as surpassing lifetime sales of the Wii U in Japan.Â
