Nintendo unsuccessfully placed a bid to secure the exclusive rights to produce video games based on the Harry Potter books way back in 1998, reports Unseen 64.
A former artist of the internal Nintendo Software Technology studio remembers an order from management to postpone work on Ridge Racer 64, Bionic Commando and Crystalis, instead putting all their efforts into putting together a rushed sales pitch for an impending auction for the game rights.
The majority of the studio was told to create a pitch for a third-person adventure game, whilst a smaller group worked on an idea for a quidditch game.
JK Rowling agreed to take a look at Nintendo’s pitch, but in the end opted to sell the rights to Warner Bros. for a reported £1 million. Games were eventually made by EA, the first of which being Harry Potter & The Philosopher’s Stone in 2001.
The video game adaptations proved to be hugely popular and would have clearly been a huge selling point for Nintendo’s platforms had the rights been secured.
