The Wii U Nintendo Network ID, the system’s version of an Xbox LIVE gamertag, is locked to the console it was created on, Nintendo has confirmed.

“A Nintendo Network Account can only be used on the console where it was created,” states Nintendo support page. “In the future, you will be able to use your Nintendo Network Account with future Nintendo consoles and other devices, such as PC’s.”

Nintendo Network IDs therefore can’t be taken to a friend’s house, and a broken Wii U means there’s currently no way of transferring the ID to a new system.

It seems baffling why the Nintendo Network ID can’t be accessed outside of the origin console, especially given that both Xbox LIVE gamertags and PSN accounts support this functionality.
