Early this morning Nintendo held a press conference in Japan, during which they announced that the launch of the DS Lite in Japan on March 2 will be supported by an initial shipment of 500,000 during its first two weeks on sale, with the figure rising to 1 million for the whole month. Also announced at the conference was a Digital TV add-on which slots into the DS game slot and transforms the DS into a portable Digital TV. The device is being produced by the Japanese company 1Seg, and has currently only been announced for release in Japan. Also announced was an Opera web browser for the DS.

Nintendo took the opportunity to make some announcements concerning some of the DS’s biggest titles. Tetris DS was announced for an April release at only 3800 yen (£19) and the long awaited New Super Mario Bros was confirmed for May at 4800 yen (£24). Nintendo also announced Calligraphy Training, a new title in the same mould as the massively successful Brain Training titles, Winning Eleven from Konami, Super Robot Wars and Dynasty Warriors. Footage of Children of Mana and XenoSaga 1 & 2 was also shown.
