A report in influential and respected Japanese business publication Nikkei Journal confirmed that Nintendo is looking into moving into the world of animated movies.

The suggestion seems to have gone down well, with the word on the street being that Nintendo – rather than outsourcing production to external companies (as has been the case with the various Pokemon animated movies) – are looking to set-up an internal studio to control the creative process from start to finish.

Whilst the original suggestion was to base any animated film on the works of Ogura Hyakunin Isshu’s collection of classic Japanese poetry, it is believed that the firm is looking at a more mainstream approach, with the likelihood being that an existing franchise will be selected for the firms first theatrical release, due in 2006.

With a diverse catalogue of intellectual property to pick from, choosing an appropriate entry into the world of film shouldn’t pose a problem. Any bets on a Zelda title first?
