A new Animal Crossing game is currently in development for the Switch, Nintendo announced during its latest Direct broadcast overnight.

The format holder managed to hold off announcing the game until the end of the presentation, and only after it revealed Isabelle as a playable character in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Sneaky buggers.

Tom Nook then rocked up on screen, which (finally) lead to the reveal of a new, mainline Animal Crossing game for Ninty's hybrid powerhouse.

Sadly that's about all we know on the game right now, though the confirmation that it'll be a full-fledged Animal Crossing game is good to know; we haven't seen one since 2013's Animal Crossing New Leaf on 3DS.

Animal Crossing for Nintendo Switch is scheduled for release at some point in 2019.
