The main console unit of Nintendo Switch is the LCD screen and detachable Joy-Con controllers, with the Dock simply providing some basic additional functionality, Nintendo has confirmed to IGN.
Prior to the announcement there had been some speculation that a dock would be utilised to provide a mobile element with additional processing power.
“The Nintendo Switch Dock has been created so that it is extremely easy to seamlessly switch from playing games on a TV to transition into a portable mode,” explained a Nintendo rep.
“The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch. The main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen, which the two Joy-Con controllers can be attached to and detached from. The main function of the Nintendo Switch Dock is to provide an output to the TV, as well as charging and providing power to the system.”
While the Dock will not be home to more horsepower, it might be possible that a docked Switch could draw on more power to increase the clock speed of its components, which would typically run slower to be more energy efficient. Think of a laptop running in low power mode when it’s not plugged into the mains.
Whilst Nintendo has talked about pricing, a leading analyst has said Switch must undercut the PS4 and Xbox One by up to $100.
