Nintendo has reacted to stunning May sales in the US with what is fast becoming typical modesty.

Independent NPD figures revealed that 19 of the top 30 best selling games of May were on Nintendo consoles, and first party titles Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit ended up as the second and third biggest selling games of the month. A staggering seven out of 10 games in NPD’s top 10 for May were Nintendo games.

The NPD sales figures also showed the Wii (675,089) and DS (452,608) as the top two selling video game systems in May, a staggering 63% of all consoles sold in the month.

The DS had a 71% share of the portable market, which won’t please Sony at all.

Nintendo called the stunning sales figures evidence of “continued consumer response to new controls and experiences”.

“The Wii Wheel and Wii Balance Board accessories make game play fun for new gamers while presenting new challenges for those who have been playing a long time,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.

“The diversity of the seven Nintendo games represented in NPD’s top 10 for May demonstrates how Nintendo has something for everyone.”

The reaction is in stark contrast to the chest thumping reactions to May US sales from Microsoft and Sony.

Nintendo took the opportunity to reveal lifetime sales of its core products in the US. The Japanese publisher has shifted nearly 10.2 million Wiis, more than 20 million DSs and 5.8 million Wii Plays.
