Nintendo is celebrating a major milestone for its Wii video game console in North America. According to independent sales tracking information from NPD Group, the Wii has sold nearly 10.9 million units across the United States in the 20 months following the console’s release in November 2006. In June the Wii sold over 666,000 units

“Wii was created with the goal of expanding the gaming universe through its intuitive motion-sensing controller,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “As we have demonstrated this week during the E3 Media & Business Summit, Wii continues to pioneer new ways for people to interact with their video games and with one another.”

The Wii continues to battle it out at the top with Nintendo’s DS handheld console, which thanks to June sales of 783,000 units now boasts life to date sales in the US of more than 20.8 million units.

Nintendo also points to the success of software on the two Nintendo platforms, with six of the top 10 best-selling games for June made for Nintendo systems. These include Guitar Hero: On Tour, Wii Fit, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii and LEGO Indiana Jones (Wii and DS).
