An exploit in Wii U’s NES Remix has forced Nintendo to terminate its time attack contest, Joystiq reports.

Based on the original Mario Bros. from 1983, players were challenged with posting their fastest time when controlling two Mario characters. However, a few contestants made use of a pause game exploit to record faster times.

Posting on Miiverse, NES Remix director Koichi Hayashida explained the decision to pull the competition.

“In the interest of being as fair as possible, we decided to terminate the event without recognising the fastest time,” Hayashida wrote. “We sincerely apologize for this matter, particularly because the vast majority of people played fairly.”

NES Remix remains available from the Nintendo eShop.
