The addition of a new gender in EA Sports’ NHL 12 is thanks to a letter written by a 14-year-old girl to EA’s Peter Moore.

In the letter Lexi Peters said she felt it was “unfair to women and girl hockey players around the world” not to include them in the game, The Globe and Mail reports.

“Lexi’s letter was a wake-up call,” stated lead producer of the franchise David Littman.

“Here’s a growing audience playing our NHL game and we hadn’t done anything to capture them.”

Later EA Sports contacted Peters to use her likeness as a model for its default female character from.

NHL 12 was released in Europe on September 9.
