The producer of Silent Hill has informed fans that the gameplay of f is not the defacto blueprint for the series moving forward as the plan is to offer a “different flavor with each title”. Silent Hill f has been a success for Konami. It sold over one million copies in just three days, selling faster than the Silent Hill 2 Remake in some regions, and it has also been cemented as the best new SH installment in two decades on Metacritic. While the game has received mostly praise, there has been a few critics of its gameplay. This largely stems from a stamina system and difficult boss fights that resulted in comparisons to Dark Souls, and, if you’re not a fan of Silent Hill f’s stamina bar, you’ll be pleased to know it will not be the default for every new installment.
Silent Hill aims to offer a “different flavor of gameplay with each title”
Silent Hill producer, Motoi Okamoto, recently posted about a TGS interview they conducted with IGN. Their tweet is originally in Japanese, so there may be some slight inaccuracies as the result of automatic translation.
Okamoto is translated as posting “not all future Silent Hill games will have gameplay like f”. This is because the aim is “to create a series that is always challenging in a positive way, offering a different flavor of gameplay with each title”.
While the gameplay will be different for every entry, there are staples that will forever remain. These staples include “quality of the story,” with Okamoto firmly believing that a “psychological story is essential to the essence of Silent Hill”. A psychological story is hence something the series “will continue to focus on” in all future works.
Continuing to deliver psychological stories makes sense as that is the core concept of Silent Hill. Ever since the first game came out in 1999, it has been established as a series that tortures its protagonists with the horrors of monsters that stem from their own psyche based on guilt and fears.
As for gameplay, many will be relived that the series will not be redoing f’s stamina system in future entries. Combat has been a pivotal point of many SH installments, and these entries have included stamina such as the Silent Hill 2 Remake where James gets tired the more he runs and fights without a break. However, stamina plays a larger role in Silent Hill f, to the point where it is divisive enough infinite for thousands to download infinite stamina mods.
Where the series is moving to next, Bloober Team are officially developing a remake of the original Silent Hill. Meanwhile, we still have Silent Hill Townfall incoming from Screen Burn, a game we haven’t heard anything about since its reveal in 2022.
