Japanese video games magazine Famitsu (translated by IGN) has confirmed that Namco Bandai is working on a next-gen sequel for Katamari Damacy. Beautiful Katamari Damacy for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will maintain the same visual style of the previous games but the extra power of the next-gen hardware has made it possible to have much larger stages filled with more rubbish to collect.

Excitingly, the game will also include online play on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, although it’s currently unclear in what form this will be. The dual analogue control scheme from the PS2 game returns, however series veterans might have to adjust slightly to the Xbox 360’s controller which doesn’t feature horizontally aligned sticks.

The music in the Katamari games has always been pretty special and you can expect much of the same, albeit new tunes, in Beautiful Katamari Damacy.

Famitsu states that the game is currently 50% complete and without a firm release date, although an October release has been rumoured for North America.

The game’s director, Jun Moriwaki, also revealed to Famitsu that he is interested in trying out a number of interfaces including the PC keyboard, DS stylus and Wii Remote. However, he notes that the Wii “controller is very special, so how to clear that is a big problem.“

Expect more information on Beautiful Katamari Damacy later this year.
