Blizzard has already teased the next expansion for Diablo 4 with content creators revealing that huge changes and new features are coming to the game.
With the long-missing Paladin class already teased to return, fans are theorising where the next expansion could take place. Following new information found in the new Season 9 update, it seems that the Western Kingdom of Westmarch makes a lot of sense.
Is Diablo 4 going back to Westmarch?
While the previous Diablo 4 expansions, Vessel of Hatred, added a new class and the jungle region of Nahantu, players are certain that the next expansion will bring back the region of Westmarch to join the returning Paladin.
Responding to the teases of the new expansion, fans theorised that Westmarch makes the most sense for the story so far. In the latest D4 update, Season 9: Sins of the Horadrim, a new NPC tells players to “go west”, which is currently met with nothing but ocean.
One player explained that the only location of note directly to the West of the current D4 map is Westmarch, a location that was ravaged during Diablo 3’s Reaper of Souls expansion. The location has also served as the main hub for Diablo Immortal which is also canon.
Westmarch is a location that is resonant to the spirit world, and is a perfect target for Mephisto to continue their reign of terror if their journey is indeed taking them there. Additionally, if Blizzard wants to earn some quick brownie points, the nostalgia factor will be great.
“It’s also a fundamentally resonant place in the Diablo universe since it’s where Reaper of Souls took place, so if they were going to reintroduce Tyrael and/or the Nephalem, Westmarch would probably be the place to do it,” one fan explained.
Additionally, the next Diablo 4 expansion is the second of three planned expansions for the live-service ARPG. While there may be more depending on the success of the next two, fans are guessing that the next expansion will see Mephisto beaten and Baal return with the third expansion bringing back the titular Diablo for a new epic battle.
The next Diablo 4 expansion isn’t expected to release until sometime next year with the third expansion likely releasing sometime in 2028. I’ll be so old then I won’t even be able to see the little damage numbers.
