A new Starcraft game is reportedly in development at Blizzard Entertainment and Nexon, alongside the long-rumoured Overwatch Mobile port. Nexon, known largely for free-to-play games like The Finals and mobile games, is teaming up with the studio to support development of the upcoming games.
Reported by MTN, via VGC, Nexon will publish the upcoming Overwatch Mobile games across the world. As part of the deal, the Korean-based company will also assist in the development of a new Starcraft title, a series that is infamously beloved in Korea.
New Starcraft in the works
According to the report, “Blizzard has been bidding since the fourth quarter of the last year for major Korean game companies, offering content development rights using the ‘Starcraft’ IP and the Korean and Japanese service rights for ‘Overwatch Mobile‘ as a package deal.”
The new Starcraft game may not be an RTS game like its predecessors, though. Previous job listings at Blizzard have called for new employees to develop an “open-world shooter”, and previous reports of the upcoming title have referred to it as some form of “shooter” game.
Additionally, the report claims that the alleged Overwatch Mobile port is being referred to within Blizzard as “Overwatch 3”. Similar to how Overwatch 2 was the start of the game’s free-to-play transition, the upcoming mobile port may have major changes for all versions of the hero shooter.
Alongside Starcraft and Overwatch, Blizzard is also continuing work on the Diablo series. While the series 2025 roadmap has been released to underwhelming response, Blizzard allegedly has a 10-year roadmap internally to support the title until 2035. Additionally, there are rumblings of a Diablo 5 at the company.
With all of these projects in the works, it appears that Blizzard is now looking for a faster release schedule than its seen during the past decade. During the last few gaming generations, many Blizzard titles were cancelled including the long-anticipated Starcraft: Ghost. Hopefully, this next game in the series will actually make it to release.
