The new Super Mario movie will be co-produced by legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo has confirmed. Shigsy will be joined by Illumination big cheese Chris Meledandri in the production chair, with Universal Pictures handling distribution duties.

Ninty’s announcement confirms previous rumblings of a new film starring the plucky plumber, which correctly outed its plans to team up with same studio responsible for the hugely successful Despicable Me franchise.

There’s not much else known about the movie at this point, other than it will be an animated effort. This isn’t all that shocking given the ‘success’ of the 1993 live-action adaptation of Mazza’s Goomba-stomping antics, although here at VideoGamer we have at least one person who would argue it’s actually the greatest movie ever made.

‘With this project, Nintendo will pursue its goals of effectively leveraging its intellectual properties in mediums outside of video games, and of bringing smiles to people around the world,’ said the company.

In case you missed it, Nintendo confirmed yesterday that Switch adventure Super Mario Odyssey is currently the best-selling game for its hybrid wonder box.Â
