Acclaimed multiplayer platformer, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, has become the first Wii game to sell over four million units in Japan.

The game launched on December 3, 2009.

Mario’s side-scroller beat the likes of Wii Sports (sold separately in Japan) and Wii Fit to the four million mark.

The success of New Super Mario Bros. Wii shows just how popular Mario is. Not only can the game claim to be the biggest selling Wii title in Japan, but it’s also shifted a reported17 million units globally, while the DS predecessor has sold a massive 24 million units worldwide.
