A new, slimmer PSP has been on the cards for some time now, with Sony themselves having confirmed that a slimmer model is in development. Solid details of the redesign have been hard to come by though, that is until Kotaku gathered a host of information from several sources close to Sony.

According to the video game blog, Sony’s redesigned PSP will feature the same internal hardware but encased in a sleeker shell. The biggest change will be that of the screen, which will deliver an ultra-crisp image but take up less space. The thinner screen will also help extend the battery life by up to four times that of the original.

Load times should be improved thanks to a faster UMD drive, and this will be helped along by 8GB of internal flash memory. The face buttons will also be given an overhaul and the D-Pad is said to be very similar to that seen on the Sixaxis.

According to the unnamed sources, Sony is still deciding whether or not to include the recently released PSP camera as a built-in component, although the deciding factor will be the overall cost of the unit.

Speaking of the price, Sony hopes to offer the redesigned PSP for under $170 and we should get an official unveiling at E3 next month.

Remember that none of this information has come directly from an official Sony source, although Kotaku does seem confident in its accuracy.
