DrinkBox Studios has announced that PSN platformer, Tales from Space: About a Blob, will be released on the US PlayStation Store on February 8, while PlayStation Plus members will have access a week earlier on February 1.

A European launch can’t be confirmed right now, but DrinkBox Studios hopes it will be “as close as possible” to the North American dates.

Tales from Space: About a Blob is a side-scrolling puzzle-platformer about a race of alien Blobs that land on an Earth-like planet and start eating everything around them. The game features a retro art style, local co-op gameplay, and plenty of humour.

As you make your way through the levels you must find and eat objects that are smaller than you, which causes you to grow. The more you eat the bigger you’ll become, eventually reaching a size which makes it possible to absorb cars, people and buildings.

The Blobs’ basic abilities include jump, absorb, slam and run. From the start of the game, player Blobs can also spit out objects they’ve already absorbed and then pull them back from a distance using a special attract ability. This ability can be used in co-op to pass objects back and forth between players.

The full game will offer seventeen levels, each with special speed run and collection achievement targets. There’s also online leaderboards to track top speed run times for each level.

Look out for a free trial version from day one, too.

We’ve always got time for a new 2D platformer and About a Blob looks like it could be a fun adventure. It looks great and the growth gameplay mechanics should ensure there’s plenty of variety in locations over the course of the 17 levels.
