While Sony annoyed the internet with the reveal of the PS5 Pro, Nintendo is simply wowing with new leaks for the Nintendo Switch 2. Alleged images of unfinished Switch 2 shells show that, for once, Nintendo isn’t re-inventing the wheel with its next console.
Nintendo Switch 2 leaks show exactly what you’d expect
Ever since the Nintendo GameCube, each Nintendo console has been built around a gimmick. Whether that’s the DS’ touchscreen, the 3DS’ 3D feature, the Wii’s motion controls or that WiiU’s gamepad, there’s always something unique.
Well, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo is reportedly making just another Switch. Images of a supposed Switch 2 chassis have made their way online, showing a slightly bigger console with new Joy-Con.
Everything seems pretty familiar outside of magnetic attachments for the controllers, some revised button placements and front-facing LEDs. It’s everything you’d expect from a console successor, but not exactly what you’d expect from Nintendo.
A focus on specs
Unlike the Nintendo or the 2000s and 2010s, the next Switch console is an iterative follow-up. There’s no new gimmick, simply a specs upgrade. In fact, the new leak comes with some pretty exciting internals including 12GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage.
The last time we’ve seen Nintendo focus on specs was back during the GameCube, a powerful console bottlenecked by its stupid, but cute, tiny discs. Since then, the gimmicks have taken over, resulting in incredible hardware that only Nintendo makes.
However, in an industry where consoles are becoming more expensive, and after the Wii U generation became a laughing stock, Nintendo is back in the game with a killer follow-up. Now we just have to hope it’s all real.
The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, if that’s what it’s actually called, is expected to release next year in 2025. It’s not known how long the current Switch will be supported for.
