There's a new Need for Speed coming this year, EA has confirmed in a post on the series' official forums today, but we shouldn't expect to hear anything about it at gaming's biggest event.

In the post, the NFS Team made note that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the long-running racing franchise, and note that 'while we’ve had some great memories over those twenty-five years, we’re not here to look back and reminisce. We’ve got our eyes set firmly on the future.'

The post notes that the series' key pillars – cars and customisation – will certainly be in the next game, they've decided to go dark for the time being and will not be showing anything in the next month: 'Will we be doing anything in June? No. It’s as simple as that.' Presumably, this is a reference to the upcoming EA Play event set to take place around the same time as E3.

As to when we will see more information, the team remain coy – but say that we will hear more soon, saying 'Our goal is to deliver a truly memorable high-speed entry into the 25 years of NFS, rather than a series of promotional events. The game matters most – a sentiment we bet you share with us.'

The most recent Need for Speed game was Need for Speed: Payback, which released back in 2017.
