Rockstar Games have announced two of the biggest franchises in modern gaming as American launch titles for Sony’s eagerly anticipated PlayStation Portable. The games are being developed by Rockstar new boys, Rockstar Leeds in conjunction with the more established San Diego and North development teams. Rockstar Leeds are made up of what was Mobius Entertainment who were responsible for mediocre titles such as American Idol and Army Men: Turf War but have a vast amount of handheld experience on the GBA.
Little is known about the new GTA game except that it is set in Liberty City. One could hazard a guess that it will take place around the same time as the first GTA III game on the PS2, as re-using some of the graphics and engine assets from that game would certainly have saved development time – allowing them to get the game out at launch.
Assuming both games bear a reasonable resemblance to their popular bigger brothers on home formats, it’s highly likely that at GTA at least will be the type of killer app Sony wants for its new baby.
