Bethesda’s Fallout 76 is in a great place after years of updates, but a new crafting overhaul has players torn over the game’s future.
Arriving in today’s Milepost Zero Update, Fallout 76 crafting has been massively retooled. Some players believe this will spark a new generation of players while others are worried about the established fanbase.
Perils of the new Fallout 76 crafting system
In a recent Reddit thread praising the new crafting system, players expressed their pleasure and displeasure for the revised game mechanics.
With Legendary items now unable to be re-rolled with so-called “God-rolls”, players now need to earn Legendary Effects as mods and apply them to items. This means that powerful loot needs to be earned and new players can depend less on predatory traders.
“It really hits the RMT and toxic traders,” one player said. “God Rolls won’t be worth as much and Star Mod Boxes should end up accessible to most players. Well done, Bethesda.”
With God rolls now less important, traders that exploit new players should become less common. However, some players are concerned that the new Fallout 76 crafting system will end up damaging the long term health of the game.
Big worries ahead
While some players have praised the new crafting system, others are worried that some players will leave because of it.
“It’s going to boost engagement initially, and then drive it off a cliff in a few seasons,” one player said. “Once enough people get their God Rolls, they will start losing interest, because there are no longer any carrots to string them along.“
“What Bethesda failed to consider, is just how generous this community is,” they continued. “ All it’s going to take, is [a] few good Samaritans learning the plans, and then start handing out mods like candy. This bypasses the grind, and will slowly sap engagement over time.”
For the time being, Fallout 76 players are still torn over the new crafting system. However, with the system launching later today, players will soon find a brand-new style of endgame waiting for them.
