Genre-defining action RPG Elden Ring took Dark Souls and brought it into the light of an open world. It took the tried and tested Souls formula and expanded it into something truly special, changing the series/sub-genre forever.

Since then, multiple Soulslike games have imitated the old formula, but none have stood up to Elden Ring, and fans are crying out for a sequel. The game received a spin-off title called Elden Ring Nightreign, but this was a multiplayer game and far from being Elden Ring 2.

Now, a new Elden Ring game is coming, but this time it’s a tabletop RPG based on Nightreign rather than a sequel to the original title. It’s also being developed by Group SNE, the same company that created the TTRPG games of Elden Ring, Dark Souls, and Armored Core, and is slated for release in Q2 of 2026.

This is all very exciting for fans of tabletop RPGs, after all, the Souls games are perfect for these adaptations, but it’s also another bitter pill to swallow for fans of the original Elden Ring. This is especially true for those fans who prefer a traditional Souls experience over the casual delights of Nightreign

Elden Ring 2 is still something fans are crying out for

Elden Ring was a generational game, the title that finally allowed the Souls series to get its flowers and eat at the top table with other mega gaming franchises, and fans are eager for it to continue.

Of course, a TTRPG does nothing to slow the development of a hypothetical Elden Ring 2, but it does serve as a reminder that one hasn’t been announced – and may never be.

FromSoftware doesn’t owe us anything. After all, artists need to be free to create without the mob breathing down their necks, but after creating such an incredible world, can you blame fans for wanting to see more of it?

The worry is that Elden Ring could go the way of Bloodborne, a legendary game and IP that was seemingly abandoned despite the outpouring of love it received – and, as it stands, this seems to be the fate of Souls games in recent years.
