Microsoft is readying a new disc format which will provide Xbox 360 games with an extra one gigabyte of storage, a development source has confirmed to Digital Foundry.

The current format of Xbox 360 game discs only allows for 6.8GB out of a maximum of 7.95 a dual layer DVD offers. The storage discrepancy is a result of over 1GB dedicated to a DVD-Video partition that also holds anti-piracy measures.

To provide an extra gigabyte for devs to work with, this video partition must have been heavily reduced or removed entirely.

The new disc format is currently said to be in a beta test phase using a copy of Halo: Reach pressed using the higher capacity format.

It’s also believed that the new format will introduce new anti-piracy measures.
