Netflix has announced that British actor Henry Cavill will star as Geralt of Rivia in the upcoming TV series based on The Witcher.

Cavill is of course best known for playing Superman in DC's Man of Steel and Justice League, and previously expressed interest in taking on the role of the monster-slaying hero. The actor also confirmed the news in a post on Instagram.

The Witcher TV series will feature eight episodes for its initial run, although not much else is known about it at this point. Netflix provided the following blurb on the show:

'Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.'

Regardless of what you may think about Cavill's casting as Geralt, it's good to know he's at least a fan of the games, having played through The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt multiple times. That's gotta count for something, right?

The Witcher TV series is expected to air in 2020.
