EA intends to release a “substantial amount” of free DLC for Need For Speed, creative director Craig Sullivan has revealed, stressing that the publisher has “no plans to charge” for additional content.

“We’re going to give you everything for free,” Sullivan said in an interview with Vice. “I’ve seen the plans for what’s going to happen over the next few weeks and months – there’s nothing in there, by which I mean, we don’t even have the ability to charge you in the game. There’s no store to speak of.

“Everything we’re doing is focusing on listening to what the fans are asking for. They’re certainly not saying to us, ‘Can you build a load of stuff and charge us for it?’ They’re not saying that, so we’re not doing that. I know some people when we do press like this, they say, ‘Yeah, but I’m sure it’ll all change in a week or two, or six months.’ It’s not going to.

“The plan is that there are no transactions in this game,” he continued. “All of the content that we’re going to give you – a pretty substantial amount in the future, starting pretty soon – is going to be free. That’s what players deserve.”

While EA has yet to announce details on future content, earlier this year executive producer Marcus Nilsson revealed that Ghost had “pretty significant plans” to keep people players engaged beyond launch, telling VideoGamer.com that it is considering expanding the game with more than just car packs.

The new DLC model is completely different to previous Need For Speed titles which have typically seen new cars introduced at a premium.

Need For Speed launches on PS4 and Xbox One this Thursday, November 5. Sadly, though, it doesn’t appear to be the refresh that many fans will have been hoping for.

“It does exactly what it sets out to do. But what it sets out to do is boring, bland, unimaginative and thoroughly dull,” reads our 5/10 review. “It’s sometimes fun, very pretty, and enables you to plaster stickers of dogs all over your newly-pink Mustang, and it’s riddled with great ideas like the fine online challenges with friends and enemies alike, annoying connectivity issues aside. But it meanders, settling on a rhythm that can only be described as ‘safe’, not pushing the player to be anything other than adequate.”

A PC version featuring an unlocked frame rate and all previously released content is due for release in spring 2016.
