80 per cent of gamers are willing to wear 3D glasses in order to experience 3D video games, a new report from the U-Decide Initiative has revealed.

As to be expected, the figure rose to 92 per cent who are willing to watch 3D video game content when not wearing 3D glasses.

U-Decide is described as an “industry wide effort to survey console and PC gamers to determine what customers want, which gaming experiences will ultimately sell, and what the near future buying patterns will be.”

It would appear that 3D glasses are not as big a barrier of entry as previously thought, but just because gamers are willing to wear the glasses, it doesn’t mean they’re willing to buying new TVs.

Of those surveyed – the figure hasn’t been revealed – 65 per cent said they already own an HDTV and over 35 per cent said they are looking to buy a 3D enabled TV within the next two years.

The large percentage of gamers willing to experience 3D by wearing glasses should please Sony, which is heavily pushing the technology, though there remains a big question mark over the amount of consumers willing to invest in the high-end hardware needed at this point in time.

Two years from now the cost of 3D televisions and glasses should have dropped considerably, making the technology more accessible to the apparent interested consumers.
