Since yesterday’s announcement of Mortal Kombat 1, fans of the series are drawing up their wishlist of characters they hope will turn up in the latest installment.

Over on the Mortal Kombat reddit, a number of threads are listing characters past and present they hope will appear in the sequel – with one of the frontrunners being ninja character Smoke. As posted by Youngstown_mafia on the Mortal Kombat subreddit, the mist-ical ninja (pun intended) has reappeared regularly in the series since his first outing as a secret character in MK2.

Smoke’s actually appeared in a few different forms across the series, including as a cyborg and even in one case, as part of another character when he made up one of the three robots in Tri-Borg. However, it seems at least for Hyaman86, there’s only one choice: “My number one hope for the roster is human Smoke.”

It’s worth noting that Smoke has had a reputation however, for being a secret or even unplayable character – such as his debut. One of Mortal Kombat 1’s new confirmed features will be Kameo fighters – characters who won’t be fully playable, but will assist fighters in combos and the like. Many players hope Smoke will get to be a full roster addition, but some are having a bit of fun given his history. “He won’t be a Kameo fighter,” says bobface222 – “He’ll be an NPC fight in the story mode.” Ooft.

The new game is set to be a prequel of sorts as the timeline gets rebooted once more, but the reveal has already confirmed some series mainstays, such as Sub Zero, Mileena, Kung Lao and more. Will Smoke join them? We’ll have to wait until the Mortal Kombat 1 release date to find out.
