With the recent announcement of Mortal Kombat 1, a lot of the series long-time fans are speculating when the game might be set, both in the sense of the time period, and within the series canon.

Members of the Mortal Kombat subreddit have been pouring over the details in the game’s first trailer since it was announced, and have noted the appearance of what appears to be electric lights behind ol’ Scorpion, meaning we could be in for a more modern-set reboot of our favourite characters. While the game has been said to be something of a reboot – players were wondering if it’d also mean a trip back in time, given the trailer’s aesthetic and nods to the past.

Series creator Ed Boon would try and clear some of the speculation up over the weekend in a “Kommunity Chat” posted not long after the game’s reveal. Explaining the game’s name, Ed said the game was “not a continuation of the Mortal Kombat 11 story” – which was an interesting claim, given that we’ve had it confirmed that regular series protagonist Liu Kang has been described as a Fire God in this one, when previously in the universe his role is usually that of apprentice to Thunder God Raiden.

“This is really the beginning of a universe…” “…so the characters have completely different roles in this timeline, and we really wanted to emphasise that with our title,” Boone added. “So this is Mortal Kombat 1, it’s a new beginning. So you’re going to be seeing, like I said, these characters reintroduced in their new roles and new relationships with each other – and that’s the main catalyst for calling this Mortal Kombat 1.”

It also sounds like Liu Kang is going to the be the game’s main focus of the game’s story mode this time around – a mode often loved by fans (and us) – rather than the tale of Scorpion and Sub Zero that usually dominates the game’s marketing. “Scorpion and Sub Zero have always been the poster child of Mortal Kombat – they’re the most recognisable characters. But because this is Liu Kang’s universe, we really wanted to mix things up there. The colour scheme in our key art is different – Liu Kang… it’s the first time we’ve really featured him up in front and so again, this is all about a whole new Mortal Kombat and I just think Liu Kang is a great face to put up front and again, punctuate that this is a brand new Mortal Kombat and it’s not just a continuation of the last one.”

Mortal Kombat 1 is set for release this September on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC as well as Nintendo Switch. Not long after the announcement – the Italian arm of Amazon appeared to inadvertently leak some of the characters that may be coming as DLC.
