Fans of Mortal Kombat got a treat during EVO 2023, as NetherRealm Studios revealed three more members of the roster, including the return of fan-favourite Reptile.

Furthermore, it was revealed that Reptile will be appearing with both his human and lizard forms in the new game, a decision that fans of the game’s subreddit are celebrating. The character – famously a secret character in the original Mortal Kombat – has appeared in two of the last three MK games (MK 2011 and MK X), but mainly in a hybrid-bipedal lizard form. A brand new trailer for MK1 has revealed he’ll have the ability to shift between human form and lizard form at will, and plenty of fans are ecstatic to see both included for the first time in a long while.

“Agile and sleek in human form, monstrous brute in his true form. I’d say this is the best MK1 design so far period.” says IHateShovels praising the design of both versions of Reptile in the game. “He is perfect,” adds Calciform. “New take on the character, good looks as a human, brutal as a reptile. Amazing moves and abilities, for the first time ever I’m hyped about him!” Dreadwolf88 goes even further “Literally couldn’t have asked for better. This is the absolute best design and decision for Reptile. I expected so little for Reptile and was completely blown away.”

In addition, it seems Reptile’s story will be hugely fleshed out in this new version of the MK universe – and for a character that has gotten fairly short shrift before, fans like Smoke142 are welcoming the change. “I’m also really excited to see his new story arc. Reptile being a good guy is something I can totally get behind. Look forward to see what direction they take him!” “I absolutely love how they made his voice and personality,” chimes in Bad-News-Co “I was able to get a psychotic/unstable and erratic behavior vibe from him on that trailer lol fits him well! Definitely feels like a comedic/sarcastic character.” The most hilarious praise though has to come from BigBlackBangBro who said simply “Call him Hannah Montana because we get the best of both worlds.”

As well as Reptile, NetherRealm Studios has confirmed that Ashrah and Havik will also be joining the Mortal Kombat 1 character list when the game launches later this year, having not been playable in an MK game since 2006’s Armageddon. The former is a Netherrealm demon who’s renounced evil, and the latter almost her opposite – a cleric of Chaos who can take apart his body at will, so we expect some very gory additions to our Mortal Kombat 1 Fatalities list when his are revealed.

We’ll have to wait and see what’s in store when the Mortal Kombat 1 release date rolls around on 14 September, 2023.
