Duncon Jones, director of independent break out hit Moon and sci-fi train movie Source Code, has signed on to helm Warcraft, Legendary Pictures’ live action adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s game universe.

Jones’ producing partner, Stuart Fenegan, will executive produce while Blizzard’s Chris Metzen will co-produce.

The movie’s script – penned by Charles Leavitt (Blood Diamond) – is still under wraps, but production on the movie is expected to begin in full this autumn, with a planned 2015 release date.

“So the gauntlet was thrown down ages ago: Can you make a proper MOVIE of a video game. I’ve always said its possible. Got to DO it now! ;)” Tweeted Jones.

For Jones Warcraft marks a major step, having previously directed indie flick Moon at a budget of only $1 million, and the $35 million Source Code. Warcraft’s rumoured $100 million budget is a considerable jump and will be expected to make a sizeable return at the box office.
