Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 has been named the best-selling game of 2011 in the UK by UKIE.

Activision’s record-breaking FPS makes it three years in a row that a Call of Duty game has topped the list, following Black Ops in 2010 and Modern Warfare 2 in 2009.

FIFA 12 took second place, having sold around a million copies in its first two days on sale back in September. EA also takes third place with Battlefield 3, making it the most successful FPS besides Modern Warfare 3.

Zumba Fitness takes fourth place, having topped the All Formats weekly chart 13 times in 2011, followed by The Edler Scrolls V: Skyrim at No.5. Skyrim is publisher Bethesda’s most successful title ever and its first game to make the end of year Top 10.

Ubisoft also sneaks into the Top 10 with Just Dance 3 at No.6 and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations at No.7. LA Noire shows up at No.8, while Saints Row: The Third at No. 9 managed to outsell Batman: Arkham City at No.10.

“In a year when overall consumer spending was down, the launch of so many high-quality titles showed that there was still strength in the UK’s boxed-product games market,” commented UKIE CEO, Jo Twist. “However, whilst the boxed product market still remains a key revenue stream, digital is where much future growth lies and it is therefore vital that we understand the size of this market. UKIE’s Digital Charts, launching this year, will be a step towards measuring digital revenues. I’d urge all games developers and publishers who want to get involved in creating these charts to join UKIE’s digital group.”

It’s interesting to see how much better Skyrim performed on Xbox 360 than it did on PS3, charting at No.3 on the Xbox, but failing to make the Top 5 on PS3.

We also find it surprising to see Saints Row: The Third charting above Batman: Arkham City, the former perhaps helped by a release closer to Christmas and more aggressive price promotions in the holiday season.

Also of note is the performance of Football Manager 2012 and 2011 on PC, which both managed to shift more copies than Skyrim. However, without digital sales it’s difficult to know which game actually came out on top overall.
