ELSPA/GfK-ChartTrack has announced that Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has smashed the UK video games sales record, shifting a massive estimated 1.23 million units and grossing £47 million in one day.
The previous record was held by Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto IV which sold an estimated 631,000 units, grossing £27.2 million on its first day of release (April 29, 2008).
“These first day sales figures are astonishing and clear evidence that video games are now mainstream in the UK,” commentec Michael Rawlinson, Director General, ELSPA. “Our form of interactive entertainment has completely come of age.”
Modern Warfare 2 is available now for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
