MMO subscriptions are in decline for the first time, according to a new study.
It’s suggested that the drop is due to the continued rise in popularity of micro-transactions, according to a Develop interview with Piers Harding-Rolls of analytics firm Screen Digest.
“I don’t believe we’ll see subscriptions grow again in this sector as micro-transactions take hold.
“Although there is some upside to this view, which depends on the performance of The Old Republic when it hits the market and the continued growth of Rift.”
Harding-Rolls adds MMOs remain the “biggest digital opportunity in game”.
This may help to explain the recent drop in subscribers for World of Warcraft.
