Minecraft has achieved over three million sales, but even before studio Mojang can get its latest title ready for gamers, Bethesda has issued the company with a letter accusing Notch and co of trademark infringement.
Bethesda has taken issue with the name, Scrolls, which quite obviously does share similarities with the publisher’s The Elder Scrolls franchise.
“Just got a letter from Bethesta’s [sic] lawyers,” Notch wrote on Twitter. “They claim ‘Scrolls’ infringes on their trademark and everyone will confuse it with Skyrim.”
Mojang’s Scrolls is a fantasy card game with an emphasis on strategy and tactics. Notch received a 15-page cease and desist letter detailed the trademark infringement.
“This is hopefully just lawyers being lawyers,” he added.
Scrolls is without a release date, while The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be in stores November 11 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Last week Bethesda’s Pete Hines admitted that there will be casualties in November given the huge number of games hitting stores.
