Microsoft has raised its sales forecast for Kinect from three million units to five million units by the end of the holiday season.

The 66 per cent increase is a reflection of pre-sales, retail orders and consumer interest, Don Mattrick, president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business, said in an interview prior to Kinect’s US launch.

Kinect for Xbox 360 is now on sale in North America, with the European release set for November 10.

In the US, 25,000 retailers are selling Kinect, and 5,000 opened at midnight.

“They are really defining Kinect as the must-have holiday item,” Mattrick said of the retailers. “It means it’s going to be our biggest holiday ever.”

Analysts have estimated that Sony’s PlayStation Move will sell approximately three million units by the end of the year, but if Microsoft’s revised forecast is correct, Kinect will blow Move out of the water.

Despite specialist scepticism, early Kinect software reviews appear more favourable than the PS Move launch line-up – Dance Central coming away with the most praise.
