3.9 million Xbox One consoles were shipped to retail during the first five weeks following the console’s launch, Microsoft has announced.

The latest figure was revealed during the company’s Q2 FY14 financial earnings report last night, which also confirmed that a further 3.5 million Xbox 360 consoles had shipped during the three months ended December 31.

Sales of the consoles helped Microsoft generate a 14 per cent year-on-year increase in revenue, with Q2 revenue standing at $24.52 billion.

“Our Commercial segment continues to outpace the overall market, and our Devices and Consumer segment had a great holiday quarter,” said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer at Microsoft.

“The investments we are making in devices and services that deliver high-value experiences to our customers, and the work we are doing with our partners, are driving strong results and positioning us well for long-term growth.”

While the figure marks a strong start for Xbox One, it also reveals that fewer Xbox One consoles were available at retail during the busy Christmas period than PlayStation 4s.

Sony announced that it had sold 4.2 million PS4 units to consumers during 2013, with Microsoft’s sell-through standing at “over 3 million” during the same time period. Of course, it’s also worth considering that Xbox One was only available within 13 territories, compared to PS4’s 48.
