Microsoft is close to securing a deal to acquire Minecraft creator Mojang, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
The deal will reportedly be valued at more than $2 billion and could be completed this week. Both Microsoft and Mojang declined to comment when contacted by the publication.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg reports that Mojang founder Markus ‘Notch’ Persson instigated the discussion after approaching Microsoft “a few months ago”. Xbox boss Phil Spencer is said to have established a “close relationship with Persson”, having “flown out to have dinners” with him.
It’s claimed that Persson is “unlikely to remain” at Mojang should the deal go through.
Back in June, presumably around the same time Mojang is reported to have reached out to Microsoft, Persson tweeted:
“Anyone want to buy my share of Mojang so I can move on with my life? Getting hate for trying to do the right thing is not my gig.”
Persson has yet to comment on today’s reports.
