Microsoft has announced that consumers in North America have now spent more than $9.7 billion on the “Xbox 360 experience” according to latest NPD data. This includes April Xbox 360 console sales of 188,000 units and over 1.8 million units of Grand Theft Auto IV for Xbox 360.
The Xbox 360 has achieved global sales of over 19 million Units, with sales in North America standing at 10.1 million according to NPD data – the first of the current crop of consoles to break the 10 million milestone.
The huge popularity of GTA 4 helped Xbox LIVE memberships increase to 12 million and Microsoft says retailers are reporting that four-in-ten Xbox 360 consoles sold were sold with a copy of the blockbuster game. Microsoft also re-iterated that “Xbox LIVE will be the only place gamers can go for exclusive “Grand Theft Auto IV” episodes”.
Microsoft also says there’s plenty to look forward to, with 2008 promising to be “another landmark year for the Xbox 360 platform”. Games lined-up for release this year include Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise and Too Human, and MS says there will be “more announcements in the coming months”.
