A report in Thursday’s edition of Japanese business daily, Nihon Keizai Shimbun, tells how Bill Gates has hinted that the software behind the Xbox may makes its way to third parties for inclusion is devices such as TVs. This has been confirmed by Microsoft Japan spokesman Kazushi Okabe. This move could help the Xbox to increase its console market share, currently dominated by the PlayStation 2.

Gates did not reveal any specifics about the software or companies who would incorporate it into their products, nor did he make it clear if the software made available would be Xbox or Xbox 360. Could this mean we end up with an all in one media centre device for TV, DVDs and gaming, and would the Xbox software be made available to Sony?
