Michael Bay has signed up to develop Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon into a film franchise at Warner Bros., and may also direct, reports Variety.

Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures says the publisher wanted Bay – currently directing the fourth Transformers movie – “because he is a master at action movies”.

Speaking about the franchise, Baronnet said: “These guys don’t belong to any specific organisation. They’re in the field where the U.S. troops are not supposed to be. It’s a small team with very strong personalities and very specific skill sets. They’re using weapons nobody knows about but it’s very grounded. It’s not sci-fi.”

Ghost Recon joins movie projects based on Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell, the former to star Michael Fassbender and is already pinned down for a Memorial Day (May 25) 2015 release.

Ubisoft is now meeting with screenwriters to work on Ghost Recon, with the goal to begin attaching talent as early as July. Should Bay like the script then he may choose to direct the project.

The Ghost Recon franchise has sold more than 24 million games worldwide, but no new game is known to be in development at this time.
