Hotly anticipated PS3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 needs to sell over one million copies on the first day it goes on sale due to its costly production, the game’s assistant producer has revealed.

MGS4, which is due out next year, looks stunning from the screenshots, trailers and gameplay footage we have seen so far, with a production value that screams epic.

However, the game’s graphical quality will almost certainly have come with a relative financial cost, and a significant one at that.

In an interview with Reuters, Ryan Payton also reiterated the game’s PS3 exclusivity, despite constant rumours to the contrary, saying: “We’re telling our fans that if you want to play Metal Gear Solid 4, you have to buy a PS3. The PlayStation brand has always been good to us, and we’re pretty bullish on the PS3.”

Keeping Solid Snake shackled on the PS3 may seem somewhat of a risk, given the machine’s lower installed base. What can’t be predicted, however, is what its position in the console race will be come MGS4’s release.
