Metal Gear Solid Master Collection blasted on Steam as players call it a “lazy, cash-grab port”

A PC version of Solid Snake’s ever-popular stealth RPG series has finally been released on Steam in the form of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection, but the community reception to it has been far from ideal. Although fans had long been waiting for an official desktop version of Hideo Kojima’s critically acclaimed masterwork, many of the reviews left by disgruntled players suggest that not everyone is pleased with the final product that Konami has provided.

Unlike our comprehensive Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 review, which praises the series for its genre-defining stealth elements, most of the opinions left on Valve’s platform largely differ from our own. Several Steam players cite performance issues, blurry graphics, and overall lack of innovation as the main reasons for their negative reviews, with one fan noting that it is “possibly the worst official way to play MGS1 as of writing (launch).”

“This port is so featureless, in fact, that there is no way to even quit the game and return to the launcher menu; you just have to Alt+F4,” they added. Other disgruntled players shared a similar sentiment, as another user described it as “a basic, bottom-of-the-barrel, no effort, worthless emulation that has no meaningful features or even an attempt at acclimating to being on PC.” They then recommended others to “stay away at all costs.”

Of course, with this being a PC launch, Konami could eventually release updates to improve the game’s overall playability. However, many within the series’ fan base aren’t holding out hope since the notorious publisher hasn’t exactly been known for listening to player complaints and requests in the past. Most are also still frustrated at Konami’s unamicable split with beloved gaming figure Hideo Kojima, further exacerbating the rift between the storied video game publisher and its community.
