Konami has revealed yet another trailer for the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, in which we saw more gameplay and got a better glimpse of a few more characters. With Unreal Engine 5 revamping the cast up to modern standards, the same can’t be said for the voice acting.
The remake, which is based on Hideo Kojima’s 2004 title, welcomes the return of Naked Snake, The Boss, and more. Despite shifting over to an entirely new engine, Konami has decided to keep the original voice acting from 2004.
Hearing the original VA from the mid-2000s juxtaposed against the new high resolution character models doesn’t quite sit right with me, and I don’t think I’m alone. It’s not that there’s an issue with the acting quality, it captured an era of ultra-American tone perfectly. It’s bombastic, Hollywood, and utterly stylised.
With the low-poly models of the originas – it brought them to life with more character than most games had previously seen. Unfortunately, when those visuals are scaled up a few generations of technology, the acting style just isn’t homogenous with what you can see. It’s uncanny.
It’s sort of a tough situation for Konami, caught between preserving the integrity and character of the original and keeping visuals up to modern standards.
It hasn’t been all smooth sailing for Konami who are keeping Metal Gear fans up-to-date with progress via the Production Hotline. One of the more controversial criticisms of Delta was that The Boss didn’t actually look much like the original character model. That appears to have been addressed now, based on new character stills, and glimpses of her in the latest trailer.
In the clip, it’s clear The Boss has been slightly remodelled to better resemble the original character. Personally, as a a huge fan of the games, I think they did a good job the first time around, capturing the essence of her character, but also acknowledge other people’s opinions on the matter. The good news is that whatever you thought of the original model, Konami is listening to fans. There’s still no concrete release date as yet, which is surprising as many were anticipating the team would use the Tokyo Game Show to flaunt an impending launch.
