A week after Meta laid off 1,000 employees, the company’s Developer Advocate claims that the company is still passionate about the future of VR.

Despite Meta, Facebook’s parent company, laying off over 1,000 Reality Labs employees, a Meta Developer Advocate claims that the company remains invested in VR.

On January 13, Meta announced major changes to its workforce with cuts to approximately 10% of the Reality Labs division, as reported by Polygon. Consequently, management dissolved the three studios behind The Walking Dead 4 VR, Deadpool VR, and Asgard’s Wrath. In spite of this dramatic overhaul, Meta’s official channels have remained quiet.

With questions regarding the company’s VR objectives mounting, Meta’s Developer Advocate, Dilmer Valecillos, addressed the issue via his X account. “I can tell you personally that we are not getting out of VR,” says Valecillos.

“I’ve been assigned to a team that is fully focused on VR programs and education.”

Meta still believes in VR’s future

Even with assurances, however, other X users still have questions pertaining to Meta’s strategy moving forward. Although Valecillos did their best to assuage their lingering concerns, they didn’t go into greater detail about the company’s larger plan of action.

“I can’t speak to broader strategy,” Valecillos admits, “but my role and team are fully focused on VR. I genuinely love VR and wouldn’t be doing this work if I didn’t believe in its future.”

Besides an additional hint that Meta is working on “games and apps”, the impact these layoffs have had remains vague.

Meta’s layoffs aren’t the first of the year, with 2026 seemingly carrying on where 2025 left off. Not only did the Tomb Raider devs suffer even more layoffs at the end of 2025, but the latest Ubisoft layoffs occurred on January 7, 2026.

Try as they might, Valecillos’ lighthearted replies and winking emojis are no match for the affirmation an official announcement from Meta would bring, especially in the wake of the aforementioned layoffs.
